Power System Transients - Introduction

Introduction To Power System Transients

A transient event is a short-lived burst of energy in a system caused by a sudden change of state. The transient energy then couples to other parts of the system, typically appearing as a short burst of oscillation.

Importance of Transients :

Transients are important because any power system must be equipped to handle peaks and other short - duration things in addition to the steady state power.

Steady state stability are restricted to small and gradual changes in the system operation conditions. But transient stability are the study of the power system following a major disturbance. For example, large disturbance in the synchronous alternator.

Damping oscillation is a typical transient response, where the output value oscillates until it reaches steady - state value.

The above figure shows the transient response.
